Band Tailed Pigeon
We took a nice walk on this gorgeous warm morning. Here is a new bird for us, perched on the wire quite far up in the air. It was hard to see any details with the naked eye, except for that distinctive white band on his head. Too big for a pigeon, too small for a hawk, too hefty, too square. Couldn't figure out the shape. Further along we passed two women with very large binoculars hanging from their necks--just the thing I needed: birders! One of them set me on the right track with "ring tailed dove," and then I was able to find Band Tailed Pigeon. Here are the clues: the iridescent green nape, the telltale white crescent, black-tipped yellow beak, and yellow feet. I repeat the details for me as well as you.
