Goosanders on the Nidd

Such a beautiful spring day again today, we went searching for the kingfisher we saw last Sunday and found these goosanders instead - not often sighted - at least by me - and what was curious about this pair was that the female stayed with her head almost on the water for quite some time, while the male looked like he was keeping guard - I'd be interested to know what that was about.
