Silver Birch

We discovered this tree which seemed to have suffered a lot from dried out bark and we thought it must have been very old. But it clearly was originally a silver birch, as there was still a lot of patches of silver bark. We wondered if it was diseased, but apart from this it seemed to be flourishing. Maybe it was just an unusual form of silver birch?
