Project 365 day 58: Catkin Dilemma
This is a self-sown hazel tree which is growing in an unsuitable place next to the shed. It used to be small, but is now getting quite inconveniently large, intruding on the mower's route from the shed to the rest of the garden, and can't continue to grow there indefinitely - but every year it produces the longest and most abundant catkins I have ever seen, which glow golden through the short, bleak winter days and lead us into spring. I would hate to remove it.
It's been beautifully sunny again today, but very chilly. P has continued to dig for water pipes, and was surprised to discover that the leaking section is not Victorian cast iron as we believed (and know it to be where it enters the house), but relatively modern plastic. The mains water has been turned on for brief periods, to refill the cold water storage tank (which supplies some rooms, but not the kitchen or main bathroom) and for laundry and dishwashing. It's not very convenient, but it is manageable. Now we need to find a suitable person to repair it, hopefully very soon, and brace ourselves for the bill.
