Roof boss

This 3.5p stamp from 1974 features a roof boss from York Minster. I don't remember if I ever went to the Minster before the fire of 1984 and I know that I refused to pay entry fee on at least one visit, but I think I may have visited it once when it was free to go in. I don't mind making a voluntary donation to maintain a building, but when it's a compulsory voluntary donation I'm not keen on that!

I don't really remember 1974 all that well, I have some memories of  nursery and the first years of junior school, but it's a long time ago now, and I don't remember an awful lot. I know I liked maths, enjoyed using an abacus, and loved starting to read...!
