A good bit of time today figuring out things with my little project. I've never done anything in the way of programming or electronics on this level ever before. A day spent transferring it onto an Arduino Nano (copy) that needed a bit of extra work to get it all to work, but it's looking a lot smaller, and tidier and manages the power much better with a battery pack. Another go at trying out the patterns in the next evening or so hopefully.
