Seamless

Rotary knitting anyone? Cuffs and collars? Horseshoes, Fire Hydrants, the liberty bell (the one that wasn't cracked), rototillers, the ferris wheel....

What do they all have in common?

Troy built. In Troy New York. Well, the Ferris Wheel wasn't built in Troy. But they think that the most powerful upright waterwheel in the world (which was built in Troy) was what gave Ferris his idea for his wheel.

This is a rotary knitting machine, which makes seamless t-shirts.

This was taken at the Burden Iron Works in South Troy. You can see pictures of the actual building there. It's an amazing place. In its heyday the iron works made 90 percent of the horseshoes for the Union Army and brought in more than a million dollars a year at a time when a good job paid $300/year. It sits just yards from the Hudson River as well as four different waterfalls that were used for power. The combination made it one of the most important spots in this county's industrial revolution. I took my "Museum: Theory and Practice" students there today and we got a private tour. In addition to the fascinating history, the building's roof is all skylight along the center and it has beautiful light. Martin Scorsese liked the light so much he filmed parts of The Age of Innocence (starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Ryder) there.

I don't do the place justice.
