Sixpence ha'penny
For those of you too young to remember, sixpence ha'penny translates into less than 3p (or 4 US cents) in today's money. This old sign is on a currently closed, jewellery shop in Thame's Buttermarket.
When Woolworths was launched in the early 20th century, Frank Woolworth considered The 6½d Stores to be his main competition, so most of Woolworth's wares were priced at 3d or 6d. A few years earlier than this, Marks' (as in Marks & Spencer) first shop in Leeds was known as the Penny Bazaar. Those were the days!
