The Caul and Devorgilla Bridge, Dumfries.

Mrs F and I took a trip down to Dumfries today on a little photo expedition to Caerlaverock Castle. Stopped on the way down for a walk and noticed the Old Bridge and Weir on the River Nith. Took a couple of shots of the weir, but nothing spectacular.

Headed of on our journey to Caerlaverock and got a few shots around the Castle but the light was less than perfect.

On the road back the light was fading and as we reached Glencaple the colours in the sky cause us to pull over and get the cameras out again. We spent a while getting some nice shots of the sunset over the River Nith.

Then we headed back North towards home. As we drove through the centre of Dumfries we noticed that the weir, known as The Caul was floodlit at night. There was todays blip sitting in front of the Old (Devorgilla) Bridge.

The Caul over the River Nith was built in the 1700's to divert the water of the River in an attempt to prevent erosion of the East bank of the River, an area now known as Whitesands.

Shortly after construction of the Weir a mill was built on the West bank to harness the power of the Nith. In the early 20th century the mills lade was used to power a 100KW turbine to supply electricity to the Troquair area of the town. This was abandoned in 1922 and the building is now Dumfries Museum's Burns Centre.
