On Reflection

Last night I had the opportunity to see a great range of wildlife photography, but what makes a really great wildlife photograph - one that makes you want to come back to it again and again? There are  many highly-proficient photographers who are more than able to capture wildlife images that are sharp, in focus and correctly exposed. With patience, perseverance and subject knowledge, images can be produced that have an initial wow factor. This may come from a photograph that uses macro-techniques to show detail that is not normally seen. It may also come from the rarity of a plant or creature, or the difficulty (and sometimes danger) of getting the shot. Today I had a look at some of the Wildlife photographer of the year images. There are a number of things that seem to make them stand out as really great images. Firstly, they usually show the subject in context and the colours, shapes and composition add to the overall appeal of the image. Secondly, they are able to convey a story. Thirdly, they often engage the viewer with their expression, real or perceived. No doubt others will agree or disagree, and find aspects of wildlife photography that I have barely touched on. Raindrops on a gothic mirror seem to encourage thought and reflection!
