Oliver's Battery
A cold day so just a short walk around the block, passing our parish sign, which was designed by a friend of ours, and has been erected on a prominent mound known as Oliver's Battery. The name dates back to the English Civil War when Oliver Cromwell besieged Winchester, although no-one knows if he really had an encampment on these ancient Iron Age earthworks, about two miles (as the crow flies)from the centre of Winchester. However, it was the site of a Saxon burial ground where a fine enamelled bronze hanging bowl and knife were found with a skeleton, and have been represented in the sign.
