The Meadows Marathon
The Meadows Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K runs took place today with His Lordship and me having a grandstand view of the entrants, a seemingly disparate bunch, who ran, jogged, shuffled and walked round the varying laps of the Meadows like so many hamsters on a wheel; it was 7 laps for the half and 14 for the full marathon.
I salute the youthful entrants their enthusiasm, but speaking from experience, think it must have been a somewhat less than exciting way to run 26+ miles without the crowd participation that exists at the huge London or New York marathons, and which keeps you going when you feel like death.
Why do I find it impossible to exit a book shop without having bought yet more books to add to the growing pile beside my bed?
Had I not been brought up to think that reading (and knitting or anything else achieved in a sitting position) during daylight hours was the occupation of the slothful, I might be able to reduce the pile much more quickly.
The strange thing is that reading a newspaper was considered an acceptable occupation during a coffee break, just as long as the dust had been flayed and the washing done and hung up to dry.
As for blipping, that has escaped the veto of course!
