The Warrumbungles
We have had a lovely day in Coonabarabran.
The town is on the edge of the Warrumbungle National Park.
The aboriginal word means “crooked mountain” which is very apt as the region is studded with rocky outcrops resulting from volcanic activity millions of years ago.
(Mr isbi has just informed me that the traditional meaning of the nearby town of Coonamble is “full of bullock’s dung”, to put it politely).
We visited sandstone caves, the Sliding Springs Observatory and White Gum Lookout with spectacular views of the region.
The area is one of the darkest sky spots there is so next time I’ll come prepared for some astrophotography.
I was very impressed to see at the observatory a sign advising the best spot to get a photo of the telescope. A nice change from “no photography”.
