A splash of gold

The sun seems to have gone on strike in eastern England - the weather has settled into a continuous pall of cloud, with low temperatures and little breeze - a far too common occurrence in late spring. I'd much rather have blue skies and frosty nights, or even a good gale really, than this largely unchanging dullness. The world seems to be poised for spring, but the low temperatures have halted progress.

I had a short walk round Longthorpe and Thorpe Wood late yesterday afternoon, after an unwonted day of tidying and sorting. Primroses added a splash of colour to the woodland ground flora, and there were plenty of Balkan Anemones in the churchyard, though most were nodding their heads and looking rather sad, waiting for some sunshine to perk them up. The golden sporophytes of Revolute Beard-moss, which first featured in my journal last spring, were one of the more cheerful sights on my perambulation..
