Into the unknown

I knew little about China then. Nobody did. The flight was to Beijing. Is that near Peking?

I was to be teaching in Wuhan. Well you have all heard of that now. Then it was quiet little backwater on the Yangste . Capital of Hubei province with a measly population of 11 million it is only the 9th biggest city in China.

In my picture, locals were strolling round an outdoor swimming pool in the East Lake
