OBEY II
Sheperd Fairey gets everywhere it seems!
Walked the dogs around Southwell before paying my respects at the funeral of a past villager who used to frequent our pub. During WWII at the age of around 24, he flew over 80 missions in a year, initially in Wellington Bombers before moving to the newly created Mosquitos. A dramatic change from a big heavy bomber to a smallish very fast bomber. It was made of wood and had no guns to make it lighter and faster, hence relying on speed as it's only defence.
[Edit]
The Red Arrow Jets were flying around the village today (was due to be yesterday). We have a Wing Commander and Squadron Leader as residents; coincidence?.I'll ask sometime. I only heard them today, as was on a zoom call.
Great Hall
Never noticed these body height gargoyles before, which are on a wall joining the State Chamber of the Great Hall with the Archbishops Palace gardens. A famous occupant of the Palace was Cardinal Wolsey and it was here that he would have held his last frantic meetings in 1530 to try and extricate himself from his failure to secure Henry VIII a divorce from Catherine of Aragon.
Charles Ӏ is also likely to have met his advisers here prior to his capture in Southwell; his arrest was certainly formalised here and was also his final place of imprisonment.
Standing next door to the Minster, it adjoined the former Palace of the Archbishop of York and is now the present official residence of the Bishop of Southwell.
The Choristers changing rooms are here and the hall is also used for practicing. It is also a charming small venue for public concerts a few of which I have attended.
