Well the intermittent fault with the car electric windows is no longer intermittent. Ordered bits off ebay, youtube tutorials watched. Seems simple enough. The drivers door card needs to come off, seems it is finding two hidden screws, disconnecting the door handle cable and a bit of manly swearing .If it doesn't go back together again - well time for a new one, this one owes us nothing, done hundreds of thousands of miles in it.
