Welcome Back

Joy unconfined as our great crested grebes are back on the secret lake.

But who’s that interloper sneaking into view? Last year a thuggish coot occupied the grebes’s lovingly constructed nest and the disconsolate grebes disappeared for the rest of the year. Now the grebes are back, but so ominously is the villainous coot scooting around our grebes’s nest.

The great crested grebe is one of our most elegant birds, thriving once again now its beautiful feathers are no longer plundered by milliners. But the coot is a new and worrying threat, and despite their fearsom3 beaks the grebes seem quite timid and non-aggressive.

I will keep you posted!
