Petroleum

I think the symbolism is quite appropriate. Before oil was discovered, the world was centered around a Carbohydrate Economy  Oil gushed forth and oil barons used any means possible to supersede carbohydrates. Petroleum wove its hydrocarbon web and took over the world's economy, for better or for worse.
