Black Dub monument
Pepper and I had a great walk with Jane and Daisy, up to the Black Dub monument on the fells near Shap. It marks the resting place of King Charles II on his March south in 1651. It’s a bleak and remote spot and I wondered why anyone would rest there, but I suppose if you have marched all the way from Scotland a rest would be good! The inscription reads:
HERE AT BLACK DUB
THE SOURCE OF THE LIVENNET
KING CHARLES THE II
REGALED HIS ARMY
AND DRANK OF THE WATER
ON HIS MARCH FROM SCOTLAND
AUGUST 8 1651
On the other sides are a portrait of the king, a lion and a crown I think, although very worn and overgrown with lichens. Very atmospheric though!
