The FM presented a cheerier face on the pandemic today as dates appeared alongside data. I did wonder if the election date on 6th May was anything to do with this change in tone? Cynicism aside these announcements were a real boost to morale.

However, traffic jams on Portobello High Street and crowds thronging on the beach in 15 degree sunshine this afternoon suggested that many already thought they were off the hook. That trend, if it carries on unchecked, could dash all our raised hopes following today’s announcement.
