around here somewhere

Sequoia

A view straight up from the centre of a close-growing group of redwood trees. These are at Hawkstone Park on the 'follies trail' - a route of several miles along wooded hills that takes in a very impressive variety of grottoes, caves, alarmingly narrow bridges, old mines, gullies and lots of winding paths and steps up and down.

It really struck me as a measure of how much the world has changed, or at least this part of it - it's difficult these days to imagine anyone deciding to build it all purely as an entertaining picturesque flourish to amuse visitors to the estate. I'd recommend it as worth the £7 entrance fee, even if the viewpoint at the top of the column was out of bounds behind a disappointing 'closed for renovations' sign.
