Trackway

I have been trying and failing to take an adequate picture of the track ways (or hollow ways) across these hills since we moved here.  They just don't look as impressive in photos as they do in real life.  The hill sides of beech woods are full of tracks that are medieval, or possibly much older, and were the routes by which the woodsmen took the wood they harvested for furniture and firewood, on the back of mules down into the valley and on to the towns where the customers were.  Over time the tracks sank deeper and deeper into the ground.  This track is only about 3m deep but another one nearby is 10m deep and almost impossible to climb out of.  When it stopped raining and the sun came out mid-afternoon, the shadow of the trees fell across this track and showed at least some of its shape, although it is very overgrown now.
