Lingfield Road - No 10 of an Occasional Series
Springfield Cottages - numbered 1 to 3 Right to Left
The 1939 Register gives us some clues as to who lived there 100 or more years ago.
No 1 in 1939 is occupied by Arthur Buckland and his second wife Matilda. It is quite possible that the family had lived there since at least 1901. There were 4 boys from his first marriage to Kate.
No 2 in 1939 is occupied by spinster Sarah Whitehead. Sarah was born in 1861 and died in 1961. Her sister Mary was born in 1858 but died in 1937. Their father died in 1899 but the 1901 Census shows them all living there with their mother; another Mary confusingly. The Purdue family then took the house over.
No 3 in 1939 is occupied by Oswald Perigoe and his wife Molly. They have two daughters Anne and Joan. Oswald and Molly married in 1934 in St Peter and St Paul in Lingfield. They appear to have moved into No 3 the same year. The last verifiable record have them living there in 1964
The previous occupants of No 3 were Sydney and Ellen Stone who were living there in 1915 when Sydney joined the army (Royal Engineers). They moved to Dormansland in 1935.
