New England Saltbox Colonial

I have been drawn to this style of colonial house for many years.  The "Saltbox" name probably comes from the shape of the wooden boxes that held salt in the colonial times.  I read once that the low sloped roof in the back was meant to face north and minimize the exposure to the cold while the higher roof would face south and receive the sun's rays to maximize the warmth during the cold New England winters.   The back of the house was usually where the kitchen was and tended to be only one story while the front was two storied.  What I read today is that it may have started during Queen Anne's taxation - more for 2 stories - and was meant to save money on taxes with half the house being only one story.  We put a dormer on the back because Logan's room was so small with a severely sloped ceiling and we converted part of the attic into an office, removed from the main house and much quieter.
