Wall decoration

We’ve walked past this object innumerable times but this is the first time I’ve taken a photo.  It’s set in its own alcove in a brick wall at the front of a rather nice property.  Why it’s there is a mystery.  There’s no indication that it has a purpose other than being decorative.  Hopefully, I’ll see the owners outside one day and will be able to ask them to enlighten me.
