"Fortress of the Britons"
is the meaning of Dumbarton the town below the 75m volcanic plug of Dumbarton Rock. Near the foot of the cleft is Dumbarton Castle with the longest history of any Scottish stronghold. It was a royal castle and yes even Mary Queen of Scots lived there before leaving for France, marriage, then her increasingly tumultuous life back in Scotland . The location on the River Clyde contributed to the importance of castle and town which was the ancient capital of Strathclyde. Worth a visit when open and the climb to the top of the rock is rewarded with fine views of the area. Also recommend a visit to Dennys Maritime Museum in the town.
