"Where did I put my nuts?"

On this mornings walk with Jonty we came across this squirrel who seemed to be quite franticly scrabbling around in the undergrowth and soil. Not sure of the reason but all I can think of is he/she is looking for a stash of nuts put away for the winter. Probably all taken root and growing now! 
He did look at us a few times but didn't dash away as they normally do, which gave me time to take a couple of photographs, one more in Extras.
I've seen walnuts, buried by squirrels, growing in our garden. I think they forget where they put them. 
Unless he's after roots, do they eat roots? I would imagine they would but never thought of it before.
