Beacon of Light
What a fabulous day we’ve had! We had planned to travel to Southern Maine for MrsP’s birthday to check out some favorite haunts, but mostly it was to see the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately it rained that day so we rescheduled the trip to today • It was our first road trip in over a year! The weather was lovely too, near 60F. We packed a picnic lunch, our masks, and headed south after breakfast. We walked the beach in Wells, ate our lunch at Short Sands Beach in York, and watched a thick sea fog roll in that magically made Long Sands Beach disappear right before our eyes! • This is Nubble Light House, also in York. It sits offshore on a 2.5 acre rocky island known as Nubble. It was built in 1879 and is now cared for by the Town of York. It stands 41’ tall. The light’s lamp oil was replaced by electricity in 1938; its red light was automated in 1987, eliminating the need for a full-time lighthouse keeper. Its Fresnel Lens can be seen 13 nautical miles away. The fog horn sounds every 10 seconds • It’s still in use today and is one of the most loved and photographed of the 65 lighthouses in Maine. It’s definitely a favorite of ours.
