Bramblings

For the first time in a while I've seen a brambling, not just the one but a whole flock!

From late September the bramblings flock over into Britain from the Baltic where they breed. They join up with other finches and here in a field they were mixing with the chaffinches, linnets, goldfinches and  yellow hammers to feed on corn spilt by the farmer.

I had to use the car as a hide and it was a pity the light wasn't a bit brighter but I think I might go back again tomorrow and have another go it all the while keeping my fingers crossed for some sunshine. They will soon be flying home to build their nests in conifers and birch woods in Scandinavia and Siberia so won't be here too much longer.
