Dim Sun
No, not a typo describing a Chinese lunch ... another trip to Maine under curiously dim, grey skies. Not much progress to report there, other than an infinitesimal amount of painting done at Portside. Nonetheless, we did drop off another load of things to the "warehouse" at Sweet Haven, and then ate a picnic lunch at Periwinkle Cottage while Mabel enjoyed some fresh air, and listened to some far off neighbourhood dogs barking, and several industrious woodpeckers hammering away in the surrounding trees.
The extra shows a rather dark side of our adorable Periwinkle Cottage. The former owners had planned to remodel an existing house which was sited on the river bank. They built what is now our little house as a guest house to be used on the property. As work was being done on their home, a devastating propane gas explosion completely leveled the house in the wee small hours one night. Thankfully no one was on the property at the time, so there were no injuries or worse, but all that remains is the foundation and the stone chimney.
Because the house is so close to the water's edge, you cannot rebuild there now, so all that remains is this awful looking eyesore. We have filed for a permit to remove the ruins and replace it with a simple stone patio. Fingers crossed we will be granted permission to do so!
