The Old Firm
Celtic and Rangers side by side at Paignton, although maybe it is a coincidence and they just like the colour scheme. Everyone is sprucing up their huts in the hope of a different sort of summer. You can sense the anticipation. The origin of the term Old Firm is unclear but may derive from the two clubs initial match when the commentators referred to the teams as ‘like two, old, firm friends’. Alternatively it may stem from a political cartoon published in a magazine prior to the 1904 Scottish Cup Final between the sides highlighting the mutual commercial benefits of their meetings.
