posted on board

a 1968 postcard franked on board the steamer King George V (built by Denny's of Dumbarton 1926)....and the extra shows the King George V at Oban, her home port  from 1936 to 1974...... except for her war service as a troopship when she made five successful rescue trips to Dunkirk harbour under gunfire....as the cachet on the postcard shows she daily sailed round Mull to Staffa and Iona in summer....our family landed on both in 1955 by means of Macbrayne's little red "flit" motor boats which came alongside to a door at water level...the transfers at the islands could be precarious if there was a swell....now Iona can be reached by small car ferry though I think maybe best done off season because of vast numbers of visitors
