New Post Brexit coins

My friend A collects coins (a numismatist) and receives newsletters and bulletins from the Royal Mint.

He has received this pre-release new coin, in a plastic case to keep it in mint condition, and has kindly allowed me to photograph it.

The UK government has ordered the release of new replacement coins to demonstrate the financial power of post Brexit Britain.

This is the new 5 pence coin, shown with the existing one to show the size difference.  All the coins will be replaced and a new £5 and £10 coin will be added.  These will be even larger and heavier.

Machines which use coins such a parking meters, food dispensing stations, etc will not be affected as those are being phased out in favour of payments by contactless cards as well as apps (iOS and Android).

Some might be concerned by the weight of the new coins in a pocket/handbag but this is a small price to pay (say the government) in order to show the world how strong we are in the face of worldwide criticism.

My own worry was one of fraud and forgery but this has been taken into account by the newly developed security feature.

You can see how this ingenious system (AFD or Anti Forgery Detection) works, as well as drawings and specifications (weights and sizes) of the new coins, by clicking on this Royal Mint link.
