Secular Simnel Cake

My Mother made this Simnel Cake.  She has forgone the marzipan balls representing the apostles (we can never remember how many there should be on the cake anyway; is it eleven?) and gone  for a few chicks instead, thus making it a secular Simnel cake, suitable  for those of all faiths, and  none.
