THE MAN OF IRON
STANGHOW MAN
Stanghow is in an area of Redcar and Cleveland that was littered with early ironstone mines. This East Cleveland village has beautiful views across the moors and coast - when the mist disappears !
Next to the Village Chapel, built in 1910, there is now a Community Hall. Here also was the Village Smithy. To commemorate this is a statue, naturally made of iron. The mist was so bad this picture is not the best, but he still stands proud against the sky.
"GOLD is for the mistress - silver for the maid -
Copper for the craftsman cunning at his trade !"
" Good " said the Baron, sitting in his hall,
"But Iron - Cold Iron - is master of them all . . ."
A selection from the poem COLD IRON.
