A Typical New England Scene
Dear Diary,
This is the old Limerick Academy built in 1880 with the town's bandstand in front. It closed as a school in 1926 when the public school in town was built and now houses the historical society. At the time, it offered two courses of study, classical for college bound students which featured Greek and Latin and a general course for others. Tuition paying students came from as faraway as New York to attend. The main street in town follows an old Native American trail as so many towns in the area do. I've added a colorized image from 1900 of the street with its stately Elm trees, a common sight in most towns in New England in the 19th century. They were all lost to Dutch Elm disease in the 1930's and 40's, a tragic loss.
