‘Stranded!’

Beautiful sunny afternoon, and the wind had died down a bit, so another jog along the promenade at Cramond. The tide was in and the view was gorgeous!

Cramond Island is one of over 40 tidal islands in Great Britain and easy access is via a paved path, only exposed at low tide. This causeway runs at the foot of a striking row of concrete pylons constructed as a submarine defence boom during the Second World War.

At high tide, though, the path is covered by several feet of seawater. Despite prominent signs, displaying safe crossing times, people frequently get stranded.

In a single week last month, RNLI crews had to rescue 19 people after they were left stranded on the island over five consecutive days!
