Tar Beach Artwork First Grade

We have a fantastic new art teacher at school. She gives the kids projects that take numerous classes to finish and have real depth to them.

This project is called Tar Beach and is based on the book written by Faith Ringgold. Tar beach is the roof top of the apartment building in Harlem where the young girl uses her imagination to fly over places in the city that hold importance for her. The author has also created story quilts that hang in museums around the country. So our art teacher had the kids create their own story quilt on paper with cut outs of themselves flying over something meaningful to them.
