Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist
Monday
Before leaving Savannah, and continuing on our journey to Florida, we stopped by the cathedral on Lafayette Square to see the interior - although we passed it yesterday, we couldn’t visit, as being a Sunday it was closed for tourist visits. Planning for the current building began in 1870, and construction began in 1873. Just two years after the spires were added, a fire tore through the cathedral. However, by 1912, the damage to the cathedral was repaired, the redecoration complete, with new stained glass windows imported from Austria, and the cathedral was re-consecrated in 1920. The interior, as you can see in my collage is really beautiful, with its murals, beautiful ceiling, and striking stations of the cross.
Our journey to our AirBnB near Merritt Island and Canavaral National Seashore took about 4 1/2 hours, and after unpacking the car, we headed to the shore. The Canaveral National Seashore is located between Titusville and New Smyrna Beach. This stretch of 25 miles of pristine Atlantic Ocean Beach, dunes and lagoon is the longest stretch of undeveloped land along the east coast of Florida. Having spent a couple of hours on the beach, we decided to drive the wildlife loop before going grocery shopping on our way back to our AirB&b. This took longer than we expected - it was longer than it looked on the map, so it was a late dinner tonight!
