Pied piper
A Pied Butcherbird is perched in a casuarina (she-oak) tree. There are four species of Butcherbird, all are native to Australasia and are related to the Australian Magpie and Currawong. They get their name from their habit of impaling captured prey (insects, small lizards) on a thorn, in a tree fork or crevice. Their call is described by one writer as 'superb slow, flute-like, mellow notes' - here is an example on YouTube.
