A fitting memorial
There are four of these headstones in the cemetery in Chobham. They mark the final resting place of servicemen - one who died in the First World War and three in the Second World War. These are Commonwealth Graves Commission headstones that are more often to be found in beautifully well kept cemeteries in 'foreign fields". My Great Uncle was killed in action on New Year's Day 1916 at the age of 21. He lies in a CWG cemetery in Bethune, Northern France. The bitter irony is that both his parents - my Great Grandparents - were German, having settled in London in the 1880s. I assume the four buried in Chobham had been brought back to the UK, where they died of their wounds. The CWG headstones were to the same design, whatever the rank of the serviceman.
