There are other ways to go from Dunedin to Wanaka but as they generally take longer there are not so popular and in Winter not at at all as the height gets into snow territory but from a scenic point of view the route via Middlemarch is totally worth the extra time. 
Extras are all from the area and from The Boss and Bossess iPhones. The suspension bridge was opened in 1880 and its near Ophir a Gold Mining Town in those days and a wonderful place that we will certainly re-visit.
