I WAS planning on replacing the chain and cassette at the weekend ANYWAY, but a mile away from work my rear mech decided it would be happier jumping into the wheel and dismembering itself somewhat terminally, taking the driveside spokes with it, bending the hanger and even twisting a few plates of chain. At least the wheel was still able to roll, making the whole thing wheelable as soon as I'd unPowerlinked the chain and eased the cage out of the spokes. It was a reasonably good rear mech and less than a year old, though as the degree of extra smoothyclickyness was merely nice rather than un-returnable-from it'll be getting replaced with the cheapest nearest availablest thing rather than waiting to find something a step or few up in a sale.
