Grutte Pier...

The sign next to the statue says...

Pier Gerlofs Donia, nicknamed Greate Pier (Kimswerd ca.1480- Sneek 1520) was a Frisian freedom fighter, warlord and folk hero. He was first a farmer in Kimswerd. In 1515, Kimswerd and Donia's farm were looted and set on fire by Saxon mercenaries; his wife and many fellow villagers were killed. Pier had lost all his possessions and started calling for a fight against the occupiers. He raised a rebel army at Arum called the Arumer Black Hope. This force consisted of poor farmers, impoverished nobles, highwaymen and bandits, later supplemented by Gelder mercenaries. Hence the nickname "Guelders Frisians" which they were given by their enemies and which was subsequently used as a badge of honor. Grutte Pier's sword was a six-foot broadsword, weighed six kilos, and was called a bidding händer. According to tradition, he could decapitate several enemies at the same time in one stroke. He also used a rhyme to see if someone was Frisian.

Bûter, brea and griene tsiis wa't that net sizze kin is gjin oprjochte Fries ... (Butter, rye bread and green cheese, who cannot say that is not a genuine / real Fries)

By having someone say this, he knew who to kill ...
