So, having explained the "Is that a doughnut or a meringe joke" to my new colleague (a Londoner born and bred), I brought in a box of Tunnock's tea cakes for her to have with her afternoon tea. I thought that eating pure sugar would help speed up her induction to Scottishness.

Delighted to report that, having lived in Glasgow for only a matter of weeks, she tells me that she is poised and ready to use the phrase "Your coat's on a shoogly peg" in casual conversation.
