Waiting and anticipating
The more the COVID guidance relaxes the more I feel I have to be doing something which is absurd and unhelpful. I spent the morning sorting out various eBay transactions involving a trip to the post office and successfully getting a refund for a package that failed to deliver, the first time that has happened. My latest purchase is a Google Cardboard virtual reality headset (£3.50) which the Ramblers recommend for global virtual walking, some of the roller coaster options look fun too.
A door step visit to L in the afternoon, this is her first week of mat leave and Islay was looking tired after more than usual lengthy exercise. A gentle reminder about the map I need for next week, it’s in their loft so I might need to fork out for another.
The swan in the blip is necessarily less energetic, I’m curious to see whether the cygnets or the baby arrive first.
The other interesting thing about the door step meeting was what was happening in the house on the opposite side of the road – a film shoot was in progress, and some one was disguising the burglar alarm. L said she thought it was Man and Witch, an eighties based fantasy adventure. The security guard I later interrogated (politely ) could not corroborate this and thought it was something ‘medieval’. She also did not know if they might require a dog, I was thinking of Islay obviously.
The day rounded off with an excellent Ramblers zoom presentation by Sofia Evemalm Graham on Scotland’s linguistically rich place names. I would not have guessed that Balmaha means The Pass of St Kentigern, and I had not thought about the hugely contentious issue of who decides on place names, many of which have been diminished by inexpert and insensitive anglicisation.
