Crossing the Nullabor
It was one of those epic days today and honestly we couldn’t believe it when we pulled in at the Road House at Cocklebiddy on the Eyre Highway and the tripmeter read 890 kilometres. We had head off at 6.45am knowing that we had a big day of driving ahead of us just to reach Eucla. Well we made great time and after the GREAT excitement of being given a golden ticket at the border to WA we decided we would push on and see how far we could get before the sun had set. Our big effort today means that we have gained about 3 hours in Esperance on Saturday and we will be able to spend more time at Cape Le Grande.
The Nullabor Plain is something that is hard to explain. You really have to drive it to understand it. I have added a couple of extras which will in a small way give you a feeling of just how desolate it is out there. But in that desolation there is great beauty. We did have a quick sprint out to the Head of the Bight to view the spectacular Great Australian Bight (see main pic) When we return home in May the waters should be populated by the Southern Right Whales who have had their calves. It’s a wonderful sight and I hope our timing is right for the return visit. My third extra is one of the wonderful windmill museum at Penang on the Eyre Highway. We met a young couple who like us were desperate to get across the border to Western Australia and shared a horror story of being locked down in their Motorhome last year when a snap lock down happened while they were travelling in Queensland. It really put the wind in our sails and we hot footed it to the border.
A highlight of our day was the revelation that an enthusiastic photographer we had met at Streaky Bay has just signed on as one of the world’s newest blippers. Rubythepelican1 has just published her first sensational blip and I know there’s a blipper in the UK - namely Yorkshirebred who is going to love following Rubythepelican. Our newest blipper is passionate about pelicans so no wonder we got on like a house on fire! Welcome to the wonderful world of Blipfoto Ruby :)
So happy so many of you have decided to follow our journey on the mapping feature that I posted a link to yesterday. It’s a lot of fun logging in and seeing just how much ground we have travelled each day.
