Penny Post
It costs 85p to post a letter these days (or 66p second class) - I had to look that up, because I can never remember. I wonder what the Victorians who posted their mail in this box would think of that!
Rowland Hill campaigned for a cheap universal postal system and in 1840 the first adhesive postage stamp was introduced - the Penny Black. The Penny Post rate remained in Great Britain until 1918.
85p equates to 204 old pennies, so that’s a lot of Victorian letters!
