Miss Miami ....

... is the name of this fishing trawler that dropped anchor in front of our nearest Norfolk Island Pine this morning. It's hard to take a landscape photo here without getting at least one NI Pine in the picture. So I might as well make a feature of it. The trawler seemed to have a rest day, and headed back to sea this evening.

Norfolk Island pines are endemic to Norfolk Island about 1500 km east of here, roughly 1/4 of the way to New Zealand. The island was sighted by Captain James Cook in 1774 on his second (of three) Pacific voyages. He noted the presence of large forests of tall straight trees that appeared to be suitable as masts for sailing ships (quoting Wikipedia). However, when the island was settled 14 years later the trees were found to be too brittle for this purpose.
